Kiteboarding spot Neusiedlersee / Jois, Burgenland, Austria
Jois is an idyllic village, embedded between the northern shores of the Neusiedler See lake and the northern foothills of the Leithagebirge mountain range.
Jois beach lies in a private bay, just to be reached by kitetaxi. In the Neusiedler lake water is never deeper than 1.5 meter, making this an ideal spot for beginners and a good training arena for advanced riders. Small waves can appear on stronger storms (5 Bft and up). Downwind sessions can be organized with local school.
Alternative Spots: Podersdorf + Breitenbrunn
Directions:
From Vienna: drive south-east on highway A4 towards Hungary. Take exit Neusiedler/See and keep driving on the B50 leaving Neusiedler am See on your left untill you get to Jois.
Wind details:
Wind: good wind season (4-6 Bft) is in spring and fall. Summer can have really flat weeks. The wind here is gusty, steady wind is rare. Best direction is N-NW. S is usually gusty from 8-20 kts. 5-7 Bft wind comes with depression coming from North. Check windfinder or windguru, also very good is www.orf.at • Weather: air and water temperatures can get quite high during summer, when the water can reach a warm 28°C, but as the lake is very shallow, the water temperature can change quickly. On hotter days a lycra shirt is enough. A short wetsuit is recommended, but bring a long one too due to sudden temperature changes. Off season a 5 mm wetsuit is needed. March-April: air 5-18°C, water 5-13°C. May: could be anything. June-August: air 15-35°C, water 15-25°C. September-October: air 5-18°C, water 5-13°C.
